SpaceCraft Studios will host a special trunk show event featuring do-it-yourself kits from Alabama Chanin on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, October 10-12, 2013 from 11am to 5:30pm each day.
Alabama Chanin is a clothing and lifestyle company based in Florence, Alabama that focuses on slow design and sustainable practices. They produce custom ready-to-wear hand-sewn garments using organic cotton grown in the United States. The DIY kit projects are from the Alabama Studio book series and the Alabama Chanin collection, and include everything you need to make it yourself. Owner Natalie Chanin was recently a featured speaker at the GOODBusiness Summit in Charleston presented by Lowcountry Local First. More information about Alabama Chanin may be found at http://www.alabamachanin.com/.
SpaceCraft Studios owner Allison Merrick has been stitching Alabama Chanin projects for over three years, and even traveled to Florence in the summer of 2011 to participate in a weekend retreat at the Alabama Chanin factory and studio. The experience helped inspire her to create SpaceCraft in 2012. She says, “Visiting the Alabama Chanin ‘factory’ provided insight into a working creative sewing studio that is at once extremely functional, and yet also beautiful and inspiring. I’ve tried to interpret that blend of feeling and functionality, in my own way, at SpaceCraft.”
In addition to the trunk show, SpaceCraft will host two Alabama Chanin Open Sewing Nights on Thursday, October 10 and Friday, October 11 from 7-9pm. There will be no instruction, but it is an opportunity to create camaraderie and swap stories with other people in the area who are working on Alabama Chanin hand-sewing projects. The open sewing night is free with the purchase of an Alabama Chanin DIY kit during the trunk show, or $20, and advance registration is required to ensure availability. Participants must register for the open sewing night in advance, and the class registration fee will be deducted from the price of the kit at the time of purchase. Refreshments will be provided. More information about the event and advance registration for open sewing night is at http://www.spacecraftstudios.com.
The trunk show will be open during the open sewing nights. Hours for the trunk show:
Thursday and Friday, October 10-11: 11am-5pm and 7-9pm
Saturday, October 12: 11am-3:30pm
